The name 'Wincanton' is derived from the Celtic 'wincawel tun' meaning 'white cawel'. Cawel is the ancient name for the River Cale. Though by the time of Doomesday the town name was spelt 'Wincaleton', understood to mean 'Pleasant town on the Cale'
